In the summer of 2023, co-founders Sarah English and Alby Guzman traveled to Kenya to celebrate Sarah's birthday. Little did the couple know that the gift of going on safari - a lifelong dream of Sarah's - would result in the inspiration to give to others.
On the outskirts of the village of Diani, Sarah and Alby visited the Daystar Nursery School, an orphanage run by one woman, Gladys Kanze Kahindi (known as "Mother Gladys") and her colleague, Rimba Tunje Mutsonga, who provide housing, clothing, food, and education to the children. There is no washing machine, no stove - food is cooked in a large cauldron over firewood - no refrigerator. The children do not have books (other than educational materials), laptops, sports equipment, musical instruments, or other typical childhood possessions, and yet they sing with unbridled joy, despite living in their incredibly impoverished circumstance.
Sarah's thoughts that day: "On my third day in Kenya I was fortunate enough to go to visit a local village and their infant school and orphanage. I was very touched by the school children, but what touched me the most was my time spent at the orphanage. The 52 children were aged from 18 months to 15 years old. They all sang for us and it took all my will power not to cry in front of them... As soon as the children went back to their classroom, my tears just came flooding. As I explained to Rimba who was trying to comfort me...they were not tears of sadness...but tears of frustration due to how unfair life was and how in this day of age this type of poverty could still exist and be allowed... The next days were filled with ideas of how I could help these children and the poor 'mama'...This is when I reached out to my dear friend, Nan O'Brien; and the rest, we shall say, will be history...We may not be able to change the World...But we can change their World 🌎 I left Kenya with the promise that I would be back with help, and I am so grateful to those special people who are making this come true..."
